Vierne’s Fifth Symphony at Buckfast

On Sunday 16th November 2025 Iain Simcock will give a rare complete performance of Vierne’s Fifth Symphony at Buckfast Abbey at 4.00pm.

Louis Vierne’s Cinquième Symphonie was given its premiere performance 100 years ago, in New York, on 21 December 1925. A remarkable work, filled with anguish and torment evoking both the composer’s tragic personal circumstances and the follies of World War One, the cyclical symphony is a masterpiece by Vierne, the organist of Notre-Dame de Paris from 1900 until his death in 1937.

The recital, which follows Vespers sung by the Abbey Choir, will last around 45 minutes and is preceded by a brief pre-concert talk to introduce the work.

Admission free, retiring collection
