This organ recital is part of a new series of lunchtime concerts taking place at St Aldhelm’s, Chessel Street, Bedminster on 29th May. The recital is given by EDWARD STANCOMBE, currently the Director of Music at St Andrews Backwell, having previously been Organist at Cotham Parish Church. Prior to that he was the Senior Organ Scholar at St Mary’s Merton, London.

He studied organ with Martyn Noble at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. As a soloist his performances have included appearances at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music for 2 consecutive years, playing Vaughan-Williams with the RCMJD symphony orchestra, and the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony with Bristol University Symphony Orchestra, and a variety of recitals around Bristol and in London. Ed is currently a first-year economics student at the University of Bristol, where he holds a Vice-Chancellor’s music scholarship. He has been elected as conductor of the University madrigal ensemble for next academic year.

His programme at St Aldhelm’s, entitled ‘COLOURS OF THE ORGAN’ is as follows –

  • Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911) – Méditation in b minor, Op. 57, No. 4
  • Hubert Parry (1848-1918) – Elegy in A-flat major
  • Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) – Sonata No. 2 in c minor, Op. 65
    I. Grave – Adagio II. Adagio
  • Emma Lou Diemer (1927-2024) – Fiesta (1996)
  • Herbert Howells (1892-1983) – Paean (1940)

Entry is free; donations for musicians and church expenses will be very welcome.

Next concert in the series, featuring Andrew Kirk, organ, is on July 10th.
